Underground Waterfalls and Unexpected Connections: A Hiking Adventure in Kenya

A couple of weeks ago, I signed up for a hiking trip to an "underground waterfall." Intrigued but unsure of what to expect, I laced up my boots and headed to the meeting point. We piled into a comfy van with Wi-Fi and charging ports (seriously, how cool is that?) and set off towards the outskirts of Nairobi.

As we drove through the lush green countryside, I couldn't help but wonder: what exactly was an underground waterfall? And what would this hike be like? My questions were soon answered when we arrived at a charming old farmhouse, now converted into a bed and breakfast with a restaurant on its grounds. It was quaint, bespoke, and full of character.

We were introduced to our guide, a former park ranger from Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and that's when I realized the value of a knowledgeable guide. As we started the hike, questions flew: "What kind of animals live here?" "How old is this rock formation?" Our guide answered them all with expertise, enriching the experience with fascinating insights.

But it wasn't just the guide who added depth to the adventure. One of the women in our group had an incredible knowledge of the local flora and fauna. She pointed out medicinal plants, shared stories of her childhood adventures in the bush, and even taught us about edible berries and snacks. Her presence transformed the hike into a living lesson on bushcraft and local traditions.

This experience highlighted something crucial about travel: it's not just about the destination; it's about the journey and the connections we make along the way. Joining a hiking group and meeting fascinating people can elevate an ordinary trip into something extraordinary.
