Respecting the Safari: A Call for Conscious Travel in Kenya

The other day, I found myself eavesdropping on a conversation at a popular coffee shop in Nairobi. Two foreign women, now working in Kenya, were discussing their upcoming safari plans. As a tour operator, my ears perked up – perhaps I could offer my services? But as the conversation unfolded, I realized these weren't the kind of clients I was looking for.

They were discussing how expensive safaris were for them, even with resident rates. In their minds, $100 a night for a non-resident in the Masai Mara was exorbitant. Now, I understand that for a local Kenyan, that's a significant amount. But I did a little digging. A single entry ticket to the London Zoo costs about £32.50 ($40) for a few hours of fun. For $100 a day in the Mara, you get a full day of unparalleled wildlife viewing, contributing to conservation efforts and supporting the livelihoods of those working in the parks.

The conversation then shifted, and one of the ladies launched into a story about her recent safari to Amboseli, offering tips to her friend. She had decided that since Amboseli was an "outrageously priced" park, she booked a hotel outside the park and used her "connection" to gain access through a back route, bypassing the official entrance and fees. She even recounted how her Tour guide, with a boastful tone, had gone off-road to get closer to the wildlife, claiming it provided a more "unforgettable experience."

This is where I had to shake my head. As a foreigner in a foreign country, respecting the local culture and environment should be a top priority. And as Kenyans, we need to uphold the rules and ensure that tourism revenue is collected properly to support conservation efforts and the livelihoods of those working in the industry not to mention being honest and decent people in general.

Travel with Respect, Not Regret

Traveling to a new destination should be about personal growth, cultural exchange, and appreciating the natural wonders of our planet. When we prioritize cutting corners and breaking rules, we not only disrespect the destination but also diminish our own travel experience.

I urge all travelers to choose reputable tour operators who prioritize responsible tourism. It might cost a bit more, but the peace of mind and the knowledge that you're contributing positively to the destination are invaluable.
