A Journey Through Time
When My Moorish History Obsession Led Me to Spain
Thankful for the opportunity to travel. Where to start? As a child, I always dreamt of the unknown—places I hadn't been to, places I'd only seen on TV—and the idea that I would one day get the opportunity to visit them. I devoured travel documentaries, tracing my fingers across maps, and imagined myself wandering through bustling markets in Marrakech or gazing at the Eiffel Tower sparkling at night.
As I've traveled the world, I've embraced new cultures, tasted exotic foods, and witnessed breathtaking landscapes. But here's a story that truly highlights the power of travel to connect us to our past:
When I was learning about culture and history in university, we had a whole unit about the Moorish conquerors of the European continent, and I was hooked. I became obsessed, poring over books and articles, plotting dates, places, and cities where their influence still lingered. I felt a strange pull towards this period of history, a yearning to experience it firsthand.
Last summer, I planned a trip to Southern Spain. For no reason I could consciously recall at the time, I picked very specific cities: Granada, Seville, and Cordoba. Nothing in particular about them stood out at first glance, just a gut feeling that I needed to be there.
Fast forward to our first days in Andalusia. As I wandered through the Alhambra in Granada, with its intricate arches and breathtaking views, a wave of recognition washed over me. The same feeling hit me as I explored the Alcázar of Seville and the Mezquita of Cordoba. I had unknowingly picked major Moorish cities, each one a treasure trove of history and architectural wonders. It was as if my subconscious, fueled by my university studies, had guided me to these places.
Cordoba: Where Faiths Intertwine
Cordoba, oh Cordoba! This city stole a piece of my heart. The Mezquita, a mosque-cathedral hybrid, is simply awe-inspiring. Imagine walking through a forest of arches, sunlight filtering through the intricate columns, the air thick with the weight of history. Originally a Visigothic church, it was transformed into a mosque during the Moorish rule, and then later reconsecrated as a cathedral. This layered history is visible in every nook and cranny, making it a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Beyond the Mezquita, Cordoba's charming streets, lined with whitewashed houses and vibrant flower pots, offer a glimpse into the city's rich past.
Seville: A Feast for the Senses
Seville is a vibrant city that bursts with life and energy. The Alcázar, a royal palace with stunning gardens and intricate tilework, is a must-see. But Seville is also about the flamenco, the tapas, and the lively atmosphere of its plazas. Lose yourself in the maze of narrow streets in the Santa Cruz neighborhood, stumble upon hidden courtyards, and savor delicious tapas in a traditional bodega. Don't forget to catch a flamenco show – the passion and energy of this art form are truly captivating.
After visiting all the sites I could, soaking in the atmosphere and imagining the lives lived within those ancient walls, I realized I had crossed off a true bucket list item that my younger self would be proud of. More than that, I felt a deep connection to the past, a sense of belonging in a place I had never been before. That's the magic of travel – it can surprise you, educate you, and even connect you to your deepest passions in ways you never imagined.
For that, I am truly grateful.
