Ol Pejeta: A Sanctuary of Wildlife Encounters and Learning
Our recent trip to Ol Pejeta Conservancy with the NC State Study Abroad Engineering 101 group was nothing short of amazing! From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this was a special place, a true testament to the power of conservation.
A Journey to Remember:
Our adventure began with a scenic drive, and we made a fun stop at some local curio shops along the way. The students had a blast browsing the unique items and practicing their haggling skills – which, I must say, improved dramatically by the end of the stop! We then hopped back into our vehicles, anticipation building as we approached the conservancy.
The moment we entered Ol Pejeta, the wildlife viewing began. Zebras grazed peacefully, welcoming us to their home. Lists in hand, the students eagerly ticked off their sightings as we made our way to Sweetwaters Serena Camp. The camp itself was a welcome oasis, and the view of the famous watering hole was a treat. While it wasn't teeming with wildlife upon our arrival, the magic of nature is unpredictable, and it certainly delivered an unforgettable experience later in our trip.
Nighttime Thrills and Wildlife Spectacles:
The highlight of the trip was definitely the night game drives. The thrill of witnessing a fresh lion kill, observing a pride in action (cubs included!), and the numerous encounters with rhinos and elephants under the starlit sky were truly breathtaking. It was a stark reminder of the power and beauty of the natural world. Some of the vehicles in our group were even lucky enough to spot a leopard – a rare and special sighting!
A Successful Safari:
With sightings of the "Big Five" and countless other incredible animals, our trip to Ol Pejeta was a resounding success. It was a privilege to witness the dedication to conservation efforts firsthand and to share this experience with the students from NC State.
